The Barletta's fight

The Barletta fight is a battle of 1503, fought by thirteen italian knights and thirteen french. The spanish army defeated the french army in the Canosa battle and then captured some french soldiers like the noble Charles De Tongue, also called Monsieur Guy de La Motte. During a banquet, he jeered the italian soldiers because they were allies by Spanish and challenged the italian army on the battlefield. The italian soldiers accepted the challenge and chose the best thirteen soldiers like the stronger soldier Ettore Fieramosca. The duel was on 13 February in the plane between Corato and Andria and was regulated by a selected judges for the both sides. The italian soldiers won the fight. Giovan Francesco Gonzaga represent this fight with also the inspiration by the historical novel of Massimo D'Azeglio, writers, politician and patriot of the italian Resurgence. In fact the scripts of this novel are used as description of the artist's artworks.
