Sergio Scatizzi

Sergio Scatizzi was born in Gragnano (Lucca, Italy) in 1918, and spends his all youth in the tuscan countryside. Then he moves to Naples, for almost a year and to Rome where he has the chance to meet Mario Mafai and Antonietta Raphael, and to take part to the lively artistic scene of the Eternal City.
In 1938 after a short stay in Paris he moves to Montecatini where he starts painting his landscapes, still life , flowers and watercolor portraits.
When he is called to serve his country in the 2 world war, he meets Giovanni Comisso, Filippo De Pisis, and Giorgio Morandi. In 1943, Scatizzi returns to Montecatini, and restarts his work as a painter. After the war he joins the group of the painters called “pistoiesi” (as the Tuscany’s city Pistoia) and exposes in several group exhibitions in Pistoia and Montecatini.
In those years he meets Adengo Soffici and in another trip to Paris he meets Comisso and De Pisis again. This journeys he takes, and the people (painters) he meets, influence his artistic work and style that is much more romantic and and lighter than the tuscan painting tradition. He has it’s first personal exhibition in Montecatini in 1949 of only landscapes, and the year after, he exposes in the XXV Biennale of Venice.
Since 1951 he is friend with Ottone Rosai, a famous italian painter, and whose studio, Scatizzi attends so much times. In the following years Scatizzi moves to Florence and meanwhile continues his artistic career. In 1982 exposes in Milan, in the Annunciata Gallery, an exposition of all his more important works.
Success, exhibitions, shows, fairs, continues for all his life, a long life made of art and dense brush strokes: the artist dies in 2009.
