The face of Marilyn Monroe withdrawn by Andy Warhol is one of the works that most impressed not only the history of the modern art but the whole contemporary iconography, becoming an icon that goes beyond the purely artistic borders.
The image is that of a poster of the famous film Niagara, only film in which the Monroe interpreted a negative character. When Warhol began to experiment on this image, the actress was dead for a short time, leaving America and the whole world upset by the tragic disappearance of one of most desired woman of all time. For Warhol, Marylin embodied the spasmodic desire of the modern society: the hollywood fame and the importance of the artwork fall in front of the repetition in series of the screen prints of Warhol and they purchase a new critical meaning.

This work is the back of the catalogue cover finely illustrated for the Warhol's exhibition by Tate Gallery from 17th February to 28th March 1971. The front cover represents the famous screen printing by Warhol with the image of Marilyn Monroe, while the back cover represents the beautiful portraif of Elizabeth Taylor.
