|Artista: Basquiat Jean-Michel||Base: 20,5 cm|
|Supporto: Paper||Altezza: 18.4 cm|
The work is characterized by dark colors in shades of gray on which stands out the word LOANS, written on a bright orange background, the only colored note of the whole. A square with three circles inside seems almost a perplexed face, while on its right there are three small stylized heads.
Basquiat painted with a pop style very different from the patinated and famous of his colleagues, his is an art that comes from the street and that preserves its brutality and dirt. His works were sold to considerable numbers when the artist was still very young, but they were never understood and their social and critical value was almost anesthetized by a market that probably feared its subversive charge.
The work was printed for the inauguration of the exhibition "Jean-Michel Basquiat" at the Kestner-Gesellschaft, Hannover, Germany (the exhibition took place from 28 November 1986 to 25 January 1987).
Color offset print. 1981. Printed in 1986. Signed in black marker, lower right. Limited edition.
Jean-Michel Basquiat was born on December 22, 1960, in Brooklyn, New York. He was the son of a Haitian-American father and a Puerto Rican mother. Since a very young age Basquiat shows an interest for art and his mother encouraged his artistic talent by taking him to art museums around New York city.
In 1968 his parents get divorced, and in 1976 he attended "City as A School", an alternative high school for talented students who failed at conventional schooling. The same years, when he was 17 years old, Basquiat starts to use drugs and begins to fill the streets of Manhattan with graffiti under the name "SAMO" a tag for Same Old Shit. His graffitis are revolutionary or senseless phrases like SAMO© SAVES IDIOTS, and often in his drawings he added words or phrases that oftentimes were crossed out.
