THE ARTWORK

-

Basquiat authorizes himself "as a heel", through an engraved and stylized sign and his features transformed into a tribal mask. Basquiat is represented himself wearing a vibrant yellow garment that looks almost scrawled. Written by childish spelling accompany the drawing, in a union of images to words.

Basquiat's Pop Art is not made up of appearance and has nothing in common with the star system: it has the smell of the street, of the dirty alleys of the Bronx, of loneliness. A style that through violent colors and a childish sign, derived from tribal graffiti, launches strong messages and denunciations. Basquiat strongly pursued the African-American cause, he was an attentive observer of an alienating and unequal society, but his works, sold to considerable numbers, were never fully understood: he did not want to see the desperate poetry that accompanies them and nobody understood their social value, perhaps so subversive as to be in some way anesthetized by the market. Probably this total misunderstanding caused the definitive collapse of Basquiat, already frail and tormented, who died at the age of 27, killed by a cocktail of drugs.

The lithograph was printed for the opening night exhibition "Jean Michel Basquiat - Paintings, 1981-1984" at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, which took place from February 9 to March 31, 1985).
